Depending on how your hard drive was corrupted, the files may return as corrupt when initially
scanned by Data Rescue 3. If Data Rescue 3 can see the files in the catalog (the "Found Files" folder),
and but the files are returning as corrupt, you can try adjusting the "Allocation Block Layout" to try
pointing to the file correctly. I recommend to try adjusting the Allocation Block Layouts to help you
with your recovery. Please follow these steps to help you use the Allocation Block Layout:
1) While reviewing your results in Step 3, go to the "Data Rescue 3" menu at the top of the screen and
select "Preferences".
2) Click on the check box for "Enable Expert Features", then close the Preferences window.
3) Click on the "Expert" drop down menu and select "Allocation Blocks Layout".
4) A small window should appear with a variety of selections available. The default selection in this
window is "0". Click on the next available selection in the list.
5) Go back to the results window and select any JPEG or document file in the list, and click on the
"Preview button".
6a) If the file appears correctly, select a few more files to preview and verify they show up properly. If
multiple files open correctly, this is a good indication that the right allocation block layout is found
and you may select all your files to recover and transfer onto the hard drive.
6b) If the file does not appear correctly, repeat steps 3 through 5 until the file is opened correctly.
If you continue having difficulties recovering the files after your Quick Scan, please try using a Deep
scan to help you find your files. You may consider also using the steps above after a Deep Scan if the
initial results do not open properly either.
In the worst case scenario where none of the files are recovered properly from the folder named after
your hard drive, you may still have a chance to recover files from the "Reconstructed Files" folder.
The "Reconstructed Files" folder contains any files found by their file patterns, which are categorized
by filetype without their original file names. When recovering files from the "Reconstructed Files"
folder, it will require you to filter through the files that has been found by Data Rescue 3 to search
for the files you are looking for. The only remaining indication to reference to is the File Size. If you
are familiar with the size of the file you are looking for, you can organize the file list by size and
recover any files close to the size you are expecting.
You may use the operating system's "Spotlight" to search for any key terms that were a part of those
files. For example, if I knew one of the key words of my document was "Washington Post", I can have
Spotlight search for any files with the words "Washington Post" inside it, and it will return a specific
amount of results for any files with those key words to narrow down what you are looking for. "
